That stamp from the scan looks like it has some issues ,the bottom right under the boat looks damaged and the top center around the perfs looks damaged also.

I think a wash wouldn't make it worse. Make sure the water is no more than Luke warm and a bit of detergent could help. A postally used example is a nice thing to have.
I agree with floortrader about possible damage (?).
Having said that, I strongly advise to not try to wash the cancel off. Most used copies of the 5/- bridge stamp that I have seen over the years; including my own copy acquired in the late 1980s; are canceled-to-order (meaning they did not do actual postal duty). Assuming your stamp is undamaged, having an actual postal cancel may make it somewhat more valuable, even if it is a bit smeared.
@climber I was never trying to wash off the cancel I just wondered if it could look a little "fresher", and yes a true "postally used" stamp is far more valuable..
