That stamp from the scan looks like it has some issues ,the bottom right under the boat looks damaged and the top center around the perfs looks damaged also.

Sidney?? It even has the correct spelling on the stamp

I think a wash wouldn't make it worse. Make sure the water is no more than Luke warm and a bit of detergent could help.
A postally used example is a nice thing to have.

I agree with floortrader about possible damage (?).

Having said that, I strongly advise to not try to wash the cancel off. Most used copies of the 5/- bridge stamp that I have seen over the years; including my own copy acquired in the late 1980s; are canceled-to-order (meaning they did not do actual postal duty). Assuming your stamp is undamaged, having an actual postal cancel may make it somewhat more valuable, even if it is a bit smeared.

I was never trying to wash off the cancel I just wondered if it could look a little "fresher", and yes a true "postally used" stamp is far more valuable..
