A stamp commemorating 50 years of the Declaration of Human Rights. The design couldn't be more drastic. How are Human Rights doing in today's Philippines?

Hi Outremer, Do you remember that photograph used for the Saudi Arabian stamp? It was taken in the Gaza strip, but symbolized the Al Aqsa situation as well.

Yes, Kris. My Michel states that Mohammed Dorra (1988-2000) was killed in a Gaza street fight, whilst with his father Jamal. It is sad that Palestine has come to be associated with barbed wire in so many stamps, reflecting the truly horrific situation that remains - it would appear - without a solution.

The accompanying stamp and similar MS show father and son more clearly (no barbed wire apparent, however).

The Palestinian stamp of 2014 commemorates Bab al-Shams "The Gate of the Sun". It was a Palestinian encampment in the West Bank that attempted to prevent the construction of an Israeli settlement on Palestinian territory in 2013.

Only a few strands of barbed wire are seen in the painting of the battlefield by Nash. Most battlefields of WWI were covered with it. One in a set of stamps issued by Great Britain for the end of WWI; 2018. Some information on the artist from the booklet cover.

The Cross of Lorraine represents the French resistance fighters of the second WW. This charity seal with the illustration by artist Raymond Gid was made after a poster he designed, even before the war was over, for the week of the missing (now 70 years ago). There is a museum about the Resistance fighters in Champigny, and I was able to visit the one in Besancon. (Scan of the label from the web.)

Another charity/solidarity sticker I found on the web. The missing are escaping from the barbed wire of a concentration camp, 1944 was still during the worst of the war. Maybe someone knows more about this sticker.

The horrors of the Battle of El Alamein in northern Africa were indescribable - barbed wire, scorching heat and sand and tanks everywhere. Many Australian solders were among those fighting against Germans and Italians. See also post on page 7. stamp 50 years later. Photo of prisoner of war camp.

In memory of the more than 100,000 Bessarabians who were deported by Stalin from what is now Moldavia in the years during and after WWII. They were brought to labor concentration camps in Siberia. 70 years after the first mass deportation, 2011.

Prime Minister Thatcher (1925-2013) visited a mine field in the Falklands after the war with Argentina there, 1983. The photograph taken of her was used for the stamp of 2013. I hope the mines have been removed - they cause horrible injuries to animals straying over them. Only penguins light enough not to set them off survive.

In memory of the mass deportations of people of Bessarabian ethnicity from the region which is now Moldavia, 65 years ago. Over 100,000 were deported to Soviet concentration camps, Gulag, by the Stalin regime. Stamp of 2016 for the third wave of deportation in 1951, the earlier stamp posted a few days ago was for the first wave of deportation.
