[Copied to here from Page 75 (plus follow-ups on page 76) of the Collecting by Engraver thread]

The listing of press installations shown below is by a single manufacturer, WIFAG, and in installation date order. It is based on the salesman's list, other philatelic research by myself, plus contributions by Derrick Slate, John Larson, Dave Cockrill and Rein C Bakhuizen van den Brink.

Other makes of press (especially Goebels and Stickney) will generally have been used by the printers mentioned before and / or after WIFAG presses were in vogue, but these are outside of the scope.

KEY: At the end of each entry on the final line are the letters I = Intaglio (recess), L = Letterpress (typography) or P = Photogravure. If the letters are repeated (say, PPP) this signifies that there was more than one of that type of printing unit on the press to enable more than one colour to be printed in a single pass. IPPP would therefore imply that one intaglio and three photogravure printing units were installed.

Glenn has already mentioned details concerning these two
Swiss presses.
Here is a bit more from the Swiss Trial Prints by Derrick M. Slate.

SSR II - WIFAG SWITZERLAND

This press was made in Switzerland by WIFAG, Winkler, Fallert A.G.
of Bern and installed at the P.T.T. printing works in Bern in August 1945. It can print in only one colour using the recess method. The Cross and Ball, Flowers and Butterflies, Cross and Whorls, and Small Hermes Head and Aztec Calendar trial prints were produced on the SSR II

SSR III - WIFAG SWITZERLAND

The SSR III was made by Winkler, Fallert A.G. of Bern and installed at the P.T.T. printing works in Bern in 1966. It can
print in up to three colours (recess and two photogravure). The Village and Mountains, Electric Express Locomotive,
and Farmhouses and Village trial prints were produced on the SSR III.
The Recess/Photogravure presses SSR I and SSR III use a very thin, quick-drying photogravure ink that gives a
screened tone to the paper.

Rein, thanks for that WIFAG link.

I really liked all those pics of the various presses
although these particular ones appear to have been used
for printing newspapers.
