shermae - very interesting list, thank you. Just other catalogs would provide rather different results. Like that Tierra del Fuego as shown by nigelc. Another example is the ebay lot by Yvert&Tellier, shown by KRelyea Therefor I recommend Michel for Europe and Gibbons for overseas. And I would be extremely interested in such list according to Updated List of 780 ASFE stamps issuing entities. Thera are some entities with just 1 stamp - Hela, Choco, several zemstvos...to mention a few |

Another entity that only issued one stamp was the town post in Tiflis/Tbilisi in Georgia.
This was a little like the later zemstvo issues but was issued back in 1857.
Michel lists this unpriced at the end of its Russia listing but doesn't mention how rare it is.
Only six copies of this stamp are known to exist.

About Tiflis, there is an article at ASFE Slovakia www site. As far as I know, only 3 stamps are known... |

Hi valdpete,
There was a fascinating article in the September edition of The London Philatelist which described in detail the process followed to expertise the sixth copy.
This article includes photographs of all six stamps.

It is a pity that The London Philatelist is not free online. SCF is excellent in this respect. |

It'a very nicely produced colour magazine and is very reasonably priced.
And it's free to RPSL members. |

This is a very interesting thread. Shermae, your list got me looking into my database - just A countries as an example and I pulled up La Aguera, 26 stamps Argentina-Cordoba, 2 stamps Argentina-Corrientes, 11 stamps Here is an image of my only Fezzan Ghadames stamp, which may not have appeared in the community yet. |

Conker, I probably skipped the Argentinian states stamps but not sure why I excluded La Aguera. I may simply have missed it. Good catch. |

This is a great topic, but determining "what is a country", can sometimes be complicated. Stamp Catalogs aren't always the best source. Conker FYI, here is my album page with all of the stamps from Fezzan Ghadames |

Wonderful DCStamps, the complete issues of F-G are now available for everyone on line. Agree about the definition of stamp issuing entities; that's why my total based on Scott catalog is less than Valdpete's based on stamp atlases. The criterion I use is that if Scott starts a section with 1 (1N1 in the case of F-G) it is acknowledging it as a separate entity. Another important issue in ASFE collecting is quantity issued, which at least quantifies the supply side. As you know, Scott ignores quantities printed. I believe Michel gives this information when known? |

Beautiful page Michael! I am a regular old worldwide collector, but I'm reading this thread with interest One naive question for those who collect a stamp from every country...Is there any limitations/definitions regarding which stamp is collected or it can be just anyone from that country and any time period? |

Chris ---I believe each collector makes their own determination . Some include revenues others also include Cinderella issues, while others include pre-cancels . |

Hi DCStamps, Thanks for sharing this fine-looking set. I only have the 10c stamp which looks a little lonely in my album. I particluarly like the camel looking at the map. These are SG 23-37 which makes your point about catalogues. SG lists all the Fezzan stamps in my one list from SG 1-72 whether they were inscribed Fezzan (SG 1-22 & SG 38-72) or Fezzan-Ghadamès (SG 23-37). Here are Ghadamès SG 9-10 (from a set of 10) issued in 1949 when the territory started to be administered separately from Fezzan: Please show the rest of this set if you have them. I'd love to see the other colours. |

If anyone is interested, I have a long discussion about "what is a country" in my last blog at DCStamps: http://www.dcstamps.com/dcstamps-in...r-2-country/While it might be a little "controversial" on a stamp forum, but I define a country based on history, not philately. Also my definition is very loose, because in history, the whole process is very messy -- Just take a look at the Russian Civil war and try to count all of the dead countries which tried and failed. Also - if you are not aware, you see quite a few of the albums from my Dead Country collection at DCStamps. I am adding new ones every few weeks or so. Michael |
