Hi...Take a look at this Scott 693 "Military College" stamp...An old Darnell 1994 catalogue recognizes the "hole in cornice" variety as 754c which is equivalent to Unitrade Scott # 693....Why would Unitrade not recognize this constant variety and acknowledge it in their catalogue..??

"Because they didn't know about it? Or they were waiting to confirm that it was a constant variety? Or, like other issues, there are many more notable constant varieties that are listed? Or, the catalogue continues to be a work in progress?"

Like many of the other "Unitrade-queries" asked on this site, wouldn't it be more useful to ask the editor of the catalogue directly?

His e-mail is noted on the first page of the Introduction.

By the way, the next edition of the Unitrade catalogue will list two more constant varieties found on this stamp (the one you note here and a 'red thread in the sky' variety).

I agree with WERT. For those who don't have a Unitrade Catalogue the listed varieties for 692 and 693 are....

red dot to left of arm,
chinstrap,
flagstaff or lightning rod,
1'876,
UFO to left of building,

Darnell list as well.....

hole in cornice,
open window and John,

Over the years I have bought numerous sheets of 692/693 at different times and have 4 or 5 copies each of a few more varieties.....

red dot in margin,
red dot to left of right tower,
tear on the inside of right sleeve,
red line on white belt of student on left side of flag bearer,

I have notified the editor as STUDYSTAMPS suggests but the response back has been hot and cold. I don't believe the editor doesn't know about these other varieties especially the ones already listed in Darnell.

I believe that if a new variety is confirmed they give credit to the finder in the Darnell catalogue.

Every so often, a new variety is discovered on recent stamps. I can attest to many myself. Given that catalogues are for a broad audience, I don't think one should expect every minor variety be listed (the Unitrade is already getting quite thick and heavy, and quite adequate for 99% of Canadian stamp collectors). If you check ebay and some dealers, auctions, you will also find many un-listed flaws, errors and oddities. A forum like the one we are on is also a good place to make your finds known. Eventually, some will make it to the catalogue, but I prefer to keep my own listing, by reading philatelic literature, monitoring E-bays, checking the various journals such as the Maple leaf, the Corgi times, the Philatelist etc...

There are lots of things Unitrade doesn't list. For example, there are many modern issues in sets of 4, which were issued in booklets of 8. They list the 4 single stamps, and the complete booklet, even though the Canada Post annual collection came with a half-booklet, containing one each of the 4 stamps. I know that the editors are good about returning messages and including suggestions if they make sense. I asked about something several years ago, and the next issue had a footnote based on my question, even though no values were given for the affected stamps.
