Welcome Swriggs42 to SCF!

Spend some time and look around the threads. Try and find some of your stamps.

It would be very nice to hear you are thinking about stamp collecting.

Stamp clubs are good. The Library is also good to look at stamp books.
Look for your stamps on ebay as well.

This is the place to post your scans at 600dpi of your stamps so we can all have a look.

Most times stamps are worth more to the collector than money.

There is a lot of stamps that are worth 1c, not many are worth a lot of money. Many, many stamp, the same have been printed for millions of letter mailed.

KGV nailed it! All I can really add is welcome aboard! Don't get your hopes up and think that they are super valuable. We see it all the time. Stamps were printed in the Millions and Billions so most are very very common and just because some material could be over 100 years old does not automatically equate to high dollar value sadly. Don't fret though, just a bit of research on your part will be necessary to know what you have and a better get an idea of what the market looks like. Pictures are a must for evaluating such items. The difference between some mega valuable and the 20 cent issues can be so subtle that it would certainly go unnoticed without the research. Good luck! Welcome to the board and looking forward to seeing your stamp images!

Hi!
I second the previous posters. Quite often, folks come across old stamps and get the impression that age equals value. Very, very rarely is that true. For the most part, stamps of real value are from pre WW1 (i.e. 1915 or so). Of course when you look in a stamp cataloge or a stamp dealers flyer, you will typically see super premium numbers. While you may pay those prices, chances are you won't come close to selling at them.

Frankly, stamp collecting is for the love of the hobby, the history and wonder, and not for monetary value (much less investment).

Also, look around the site first. To get the correct answers to your questions you will yield the best results if you ask your questions in the proper forum. Many of the knowledgeable collectors here focus in only a few areas so they only look in the corresponding areas here.

The search function works very well too. The majority of common stamp questions have already been asked here multiple times. Don't get your hopes up on hitting the financial home run with the Stamps as 99% are common with little financial value.

Hi again!
One of my favorite ways of checking value and other stamp data is a search of ebay. I can't count the number of times a search there has given me the answers..............

What the heck is the pic of Lionel Ritchie about?

*sigh* No one gets the joke!

"Hello" was a popular Lionel Richie song from back in the early 80s.

Hello Swriggs42, welcome to Stamp Community.

You can post the pics here and remember to change the title (the first post) a bit every time, so we could all see what you are talking about and see the value of them roughly.

Then, if there are any super good stamps we can point them out and you can concentrate in another post on an appropriate forum here to figure it out.

A catalogue you own or at the library and ebay and Delcampe and Bidstart are good starts to get values in a way that shows stamp[s values relatively to other stamps.

Condition is everything. A scratched car or stamp will be worth less than one with a new good paint job kind of.

How many stamps are you talking about? Hundreds? Thousands? The folks writing above here have given you a good example of how the pricing and valuation works with stamps mostly.

Checking out the 2014 Scott catalog from the library is a good starting point. Yes it might be time consuming but then when you bring it to a stamp shop for appraisal you'll be armed with a little information. The library way is free which is good.
