Hi all, I would just like to know about the watermark's on these stamps, Im new to the stamp hobby but very keen to learn, if anybody could upload pictures of all the different types of the watermark's which were used on these and the name of the watermark next to the picture please if possible, normal watermark's,inverted watermark's and if there are any error watermark's (by error I mean not just inverted watermark's but watermark's that are rare to find on them, E.G= a watermark inverted and backward's etc, If there is such an 'error'), I have many thousands to sort through, in excess of 20,000,mainly low values, 2 and a half d (red ones), 3d(purple),4d (white/blue),I also have 'postage revenue' stamps in different denomination's, im not sure if they are classed as wildings also? Thankyou in advance, Turbo

Go to ebay uk and pick up a Collect British Stamps or even better a Gibbons Concise catalogue. Readily available for a few pounds or less occasionally. That way you will have to hand all the relevant watermarks. Doing it online is possible of course but having a written "bible" is much better. |

Hi TurboJay, Amazon are listing a book sold by Stanley Gibbons, "The Dollis Hill Find" by Edward Klempka. It is about the Dollis Hill Wildings and the phosphor trials, 1957 to 1972. Might that interest you? On offer for £25. Search under 'Books' Terry PS. Also: specialised QE11 definitives catalogue covering Wildings and Machins in two volumes on ebay, £39.95. Item number, 171208928185. and GB Specialised QE11 Pre Decimal Issues (1952 to end 1970) Catalogue. Stanley Gibbons Direct, £39.95. TC. |

..."it will have all the wilding watermarks in there?"
A Stanley Gibbons Concise is more than adequate for sorting Wilding kiloware. It will contain all GB watermarks from Victoria onwards including inverted and sideways. Anything you are not sure of can be posted here or, if you feel the extra money is worth spending, buy the Stanley Gibbons Specialised. |

Hi TurboJay,
Remember those catalogue prices are for new current editions. You may be able to pick up recent previous editions for substantially less. If current cat values are not essential (often way up on street values) the technical info should be the same. Good hunting.

Hi Terry, Thankyou for that vital information, Im just thinking about getting a cheap book as money is tight at the moment, my plan is simple, I buy a cheap book, get the cat number (if they are the same in each catalogue?), then I will go to my local library and see the cat value, is that possible do you think? if not then please tell me a better way if you have one. Hi Turbo, Cat numbers are generally the same from year to year, although there are occasions (not many) when new numbers have to be inserted for new varieties, errors and such. I wouldn't let that put you off buying older catalogues, say not more than 5 years old. Your idea is a good one if you do want current cat value, though ebay probably better for current selling prices. Terry. |
