Interesting, bujutsu. the Ryan catalogue has the 6-10-D Excise License as Imperial Tobacco.

I better circle back to the Ryan catalogue...I didn't realize the codes were in there.

don't mean to be misleading. Some codes are displayed toward the back of the catalogue. He just happens to show some on page 106 which have this particular code, and he gives it a name. I wish he had a list of the codes. I am personally on the hunt for one.

Bujutsu, can you let us know the source for the i.d.? I think I might be interested in doing more followup on these. I like 'em.

jamesw, I am curious. Thinking along the postal history line that used stamps are generally worth more "on cover" than soaked, and similarly with fiscal history that revenue stamps are generally worth more on originnal document or product to show usage in context, why you might chose to remove the cigar stamp from the White Owl box? As you state, it does now fit in an album, but doesn't it lose a lot of its character? Perhaps this is more of a general question of different philosophies in dealing with 3-D philately like cigarette packs, cigar boxes, etc. To remove or not to remove?

The source of my information was an article in the Canadian Revenue Newsletter from January 1997. It was authored by Christopher D. Ryan, who is well versed on the topic.

The code was used by raw leaf 'tobacco' packers, not Imperial Tobacco solely.

Now, unless they changed the codes for the smaller version cigarette stamps, then I am not aware of that.

I am going to go through more of my files to see if there is any more information on these or if there were any updates that I am not aware of??

Here is some more information that I came across. I am becoming more confused than I am informed

District 6 is listed for St. John's, N.B., in another bulleting from the same society, while 10D is listed for Montreal. So, the excise stamp with the overprint 6-10D is somewhat confusing.

Maybe someone else can shed more light on this?

I just found a short note in Canada Revenue Newsletter #51 for December 2005 that 6-10D was used by the General Cigar Company Limited from 1924 to 1951 or 1952. The same company also used # 2-10D on their excise stamps as well. This number was used from 1951 or 1952 right up to 1962.

Hope this helps? I can't find anything else on this topic.

I've shown this elsewhere, so at the risk of boring a few who have already seen this, I picked up a pair of the pictured 1/8lb Series of 1887, RN2 in the recent Ryan, and I wonder how uncommon they really are, as I've seen a handful of examples in just a few days of looking...

I have a number of these as well and have to wonder about their scarcity.

Here are a few from my collection.
