Hi All

I have a few Canadian military markings on US covers for ships visiting Norfolk, Virginia. I have noticed that with the different Canadian ships that visited, there was also a cancel on the US stamp from a different US ship.

What I am wondering is, was there an 'honourary' sister ship used in conjunction with any given Canadian ship that visited the US?

The "Welcome to Norfolk" salutation on the cover suggests the envelopes were printed in Norfolk for use by the arriving sailors.

I don't see any evidence that the cover was mailed by a Canadian sailor. Maybe the cover was not posted by a Canadian sailor, but rather a U.S one Probably, the envelopes were available ashore and a U.S. sailor bought one and posted it. The U.S. address, postage, and postmark suggests to me that it was mailed by an American.

If a Canadian sailor had mailed the cover aboard his ship, seems like Canadian postage would have been applied. If a Canadian mailed it elsewhere in Norfolk, it would have needed U.S. postage or have been marked postage due.

The Supply Office hand stamp is a puzzle for sure.

All just speculation on my part. Interesting item, though. I'll be watching for a more authoritative answer.
