I was wondering if anyone know what the postal marking on this cover is meant to say. A closeup: Thanks!

This is only a guess ... the words in parenthesis are questionable:
RECEIVED UNDER COVER (FROM) BOSTON, MASS., FROM _______BEDFORD, PA____ (WAS) FORWARDED IN THE MAIL

That is a better guess than I could have come up with, and probably right on the spot. |

I keep thinking that the space between "cover" and "Boston" is to big for just the word "from". It looks like there is a number 7 in there. Could be the date and then from. |

There's also something more than just "FROM" at the beginning of the third line before the words "FORWARDED IN THE MAIL".
I also can't figure out what Bedford, PA has to do with anything on a cover directed from Boston to New York. Of course, the sender could have mailed it from Pennsylvania, I suppose, but doesn't seem likely given the address used on the cover.
It may be one of those mysteries you can never figure out entirely unless, of course, you come upon a similar cover with a similar postal marking. |

Just an additional note regarding the cover. It was the first flight for Contract Air Mail Route #1. The contract was with the Colonial Air Transport company. This part of the route was flown by Major Talbor O Freeman. |

Someone in Bedford, PA prepared the cover to be flown on the first flight from Boston to New York. Rather than post it from Bedford to New York via Boston and get a Bedford postmark, he sent it inside another envelope to the post office in Boston where it was cancelled with the large round cancel/cachet and put on the flight to New York. This is the way almost all first flight covers were and are still prepared. |
