Seek a Belgium Specialist. 1930 Centenary of Belgian Independence. Scott 218 Officiele Catalogus #302 60c Leopold 1st in Brown Violet
There is a variety (unlisted Scott) with the background to the Value Tablet in white paint ?
Any members know why this was done? Any gossip on this? Thanks

Hello floortrader, sure, not a flaw, but a "variety" the background intentionally painted white (Or at least, that's how I read it) Here is the catalogue identification. Looking to find out why? perhaps a special emmission for the centenary? still seems weird. Mine, under the loupe, background appears a substance that raises the profile, as thick ink, but appears silvery, white, my stamp is not mint so it could be anything. |

If any members can assist me with all information on this postmark, it would be appreciated. Would this be a variation on the Postal Savings bank "Pizza Wheels" ? Thanks |

That postmark is called "Diamant Ambulant"
Used to cancel stamps that arrived at the post office (transit or final destination) not cancelled at origin |

Rod, I can not help with your cancel. However, the "variety" that you asked about in November I can translate what the catalog page says about it. The Dutch word "eigenaardigheid" is translated as "oddity". I believe the picture shown on that catalog page is a little more ink missing as the samples floortrader shows!

Since I have your collective ears, Any idea what the device is, on the map ? (Orval semi-postal) I am sure it is not a computer mouse, would it be used for keeping scrolls from recoiling when viewing? (The round and square doohickey, joined by string / rope) |

Quote: Any idea what the device is, on the map ? (Orval semi-postal) The device is used to determine whether something stands straight, not askew. The square part is put against a - say - wall, the round part dangles down on the rope. If the round part also touches the wall, the wall is straight, if not it is askew. Makes sense as an architects or builders tool. Nowadays people would use what I think in English is called a bubble level. |

Fabulous SWH, many thanks indeed. I am glad I asked.
Jorge: "Diamant Ambulant"
We in the West translate Ambulant as TPO. Would this be in any way suggestive of this Postmark? or have we made an error in translation? We note "Diamant Ambulant" is used for the French Diamond hammers.

Rod, SWH, I think that device is called a "schietlood" in Dutch. In English it would be a "plumb" Sorry, I meant the Orval device!
