I have inherited a large collection of stamps, I will start off with the small album first, its about 90% to 95% complete from 1938 to 1995 (1947 to 1992). There are 65 pages of stamps in this album, all new. What would the value of something like this be? I plan on selling the collection. Thanks in advance!

Hi 808, and welcome to this forum. It is virtually impossible to give any kind of advise without knowing what we are talking about. If you can scan a few pages of the album that would be a big help!

It won't let me view your pics without signing in, and that's not going to happen.
In a nutshell, with the exception of a couple dozen issues, much of the 1960 and later Japan will be below face value material. On the items from 1938, a good chunk of the value will be in the pre-1950 souvenir sheets, although there will also be good value in some of the sets -- but condition is everything. I see staining on your album pages -- hopefully that has not migrated to the souvenir sheets and high value stamps.
If you are in the US, I suggest that you try to get hold of a Scott worldwide catalog (you will need the volume that contains "J" countries, which will be Volume 4 on the recent catalogs). You can try the library, or you can buy an older edition used one for under $10 (you should get one from within the past 10 years). Since your collection is on Scott Specialty pages, it should be quite simple to match up the stamps to the catalog numbers/values.
Best wishes!

Thanks khj, I do have the scotts book but its from 1994. Luckily it looks like the stamps have a paper liner behind them. My Aunt was a serious collector, so she kept everything proper. |

That's good. Check the souvenir sheets first, as those are the easiest to spot and identify. Even 1994 catalog will give you a good idea of which items are premium items. Some only have minor premiums, but several of those pre-1950 S/S have catalog values of $100+. Also check the early 100y and 500y stamps, and stamps like the 1949 Postal Week commemorative (Japan #479). If you have items like that in good condition in the collection, then you should be able to easily attract some buyers at an auction house or on ebay. |

Hi again, I got the scott 2007 catalog but it confuses me on what to value the stamps at. I attached a pic from the catalog and it says the price of $24.25 on the high end, do I multiply this by 4x to get the value? advice needed, thanks! |

the $24.25 is the price for all 4 stamps listed there. But yours isn't one of those anyway. Yours is a souvenir sheet that I would think would be close by to what you were looking at.
edit - nm the souvenir sheet is listed right there 475a $4.00 mint, $4.75 used |

A real value is hard to figure out, without seeing the whole collection . There are questions about condition and do the Park issues have folders. The price for a collection up for auction right now with all the key stamps between 1936-1987 has a estimate value of $500 to $750 but will most likely start around $250/$300.00 and see if there is any interest . |
