Interesting cross over question. My view is that replicas are sort of different than forgeries in the stamp world. Not a semantic distinction but a real one, because some forgeries of old stamps that are clearly marked as such have a place in postal history and are collectible (read valuable $$ wise) for SOME collectors. To me a replica is different--a coin created to be sold as a collectible but not legal tender. Forged stamps (say Sperati to name one) have some cachet from the era when individual's created stamps as frauds to sell them instead of stamps. There are many examples of these, too numerous to cite. Their value is debatable I suppose, and I don't buy them--but its a supply demand thing because some of the old forged stamps (again properly marked as such) are small in number...and can also be fillers.
I am not talking about fakes or frauds which are not honestly presented as such (and by the way--I see many fakes on
ebay all the time but I am an expert in my area, so I can tell them quickly). I am not sure if the same thing exists in coins, but at least for stamps--forgeries do I have a place
