Hong Kong 1946 Peace / Victory issue arrived yesterday.

I received a booklet pane of 583a and a precancel plate number coil strip of 5 of 1903a #8.

Machins to add to the collection over the holiday break.

My package arrived from Status International after a ten week journey across the waters.

Postcard 1923 3 Dec. Krakow to Tarnow



The postcard is interesting from several angles.

Poland experienced inflation between 1921 & May 1925, although not on the same scale as Germany, nor were the changes as frequent. The Polish Post Office stopped printing pre-paid postal cards in 1922, instead, printing cards in the old format but without indica to which appropriate stamps were attached.

This card is an example of this with postage of 15,000 Marks applied, being the domestic postcard rate 1 Dec 1923 to 31 Dec 1923.

Poland had been divided between Austria, Prussia/Germany and Russia between 1795-1918. Krakow, being in the Austrian part, used Austrian stamps & cancellors were bi-lingual with 'Krakau' on top & Polish 'Krakow' on the bottom. Here is an unmodified example used in 1919 after Poland had gained her independence



This type of cancellor was modified by erasing the top German part leaving the Polish 'Krakow' on the bottom, & it is this type that is used on the infla postcard a full 5 years after independence.

By a coincidence I just won another postcard from this period, but to an international destination. They will nicely complement each other on the album page.

Renden, they are not just postmarks - they are Mailers marks I believe. Pictures are very small but I think the addressee cancelled this himself

indeed, he did (he told me) Not familiar with the terminology - thanks.....often do my postmarks at the PO....never needed a permit ?

Renden, These collectors like to cancel their own outgoing mail which gives one a more standardized postmark. Another plus is that the stamp does not get torn up in the mailstream like happens so often.

I have begun to accumulate a small collection of different Mailer's Postmark Permit cancels on cover. I have maybe 10 different numbers at this point. Most of the ones I have look more commercially applied rather than handstamped. #511 may be the highest number I have seen.

Does a mailer's handstamp (like # 511) belong to the mailer and what is the US cost for such a particular permit ?

Glad to hear that the package arrived safe and sound. And that you are pleased with the stamp and the cancel. The stamp has been lingering in my postage drawer since the mid-1990s. It is nice for it to finally have a good home.

In short, it is free. All one needs to do is fill out the appropriate form and get it signed by the local postmaster. In my case the number assigned (e.g., #511) was the next available number in ascending order (i.e., there have been 510 previous MPPs issued in Albuquerque, NM). I ordered the MPP stamp from an online vendor and got the date stamp from Amazon.

I got a MPP so that the stamps on my philatelic mail would be properly cancelled and not damaged by the cancellation machines. While in theory a postal clerk could hand-cancel my mail, in practice, the postal clerks here in the "Land of Enchantment" are too stupid/lazy/mean to do so when I have asked.

The one downside is that I can only post from the main ABQ post office (downtown), which is not near where I live. But as I do go downtown every three weeks for a hair cut, I try to time my philatelic mailings accordingly.
