Hi all, hope everyone has been well and happy to be free of Winter finally! I've been super busy with work and trying to keep the ebay auctions going, but it's been forever since I've had time to work on my personal collection :( I am going through some Canadian pages and I have a mystery stamp. The stamp is in a pocket labeled as a Small Queen #38 but I just don't see this as being slate green. On the other hand, #42 is listed as being grey, but looking at the Unitrade photos for each, I would say this stamp is closer in color to #38. Perfs are 12, stamp measures 19mm wide by 24mm tall perf tip to tip, so I have no idea which # this is. Can anyone help me ID this little lady?

Again, my gut is this is a #42 and was mistakenly placed in the #38 spot.

Thanks and hope everyone is well!
Dan

Hi Faken...That is a hard call...I was looking at your scan and don't see any traces of green..But scans are deceiving at best.

Unitrade tells us both perforations are the same and I don't see any printer's dots to classify as Montreal or Ottawa print.

As Unitrade says a #42 is of poor quality...My guess you have a #42 there..But, I am far from being an expert..Hope others can give their opinion....Nice stamp

I don't see the slightest hint of green on my screens (either of my 2 monitors). That makes it 42 to me.

Thanks guys... the scan is very accurate to the actual color to the naked eye under white light. There is definitely no green as far as I can tell in person. Does anyone have a high resolution scan of a #38 available? This is why I need to pick up those books from VGG one day.

I upload the image to my own server and then I just take the URL of the stamp (in this case it's http://www.danrichard.com/dump/canada_mystery.jpg ) and I put it in between the forum image tags like this:

*** Change { with [ and } with ]

Just purchased what I thought was a pretty good copy of Scott 38 (slate green) and put it beside a poor copy of Scott 42 (grey) so that you can easily see the difference. (These two make the ID pretty simple.)

I would like to hear opinions about the 38. It is perf 12 x 12.25, so is the later Montreal printing. It has a thin in top right, but appears to be Mint, No Gum? But maybe it is a very light or erased cancel. I like the centering. What do you think?
