Has anyone ever seen this fancy cancel? I've had this cover for years and shown to some knowledgable folks but no one is familiar with it. I think it may be a flying devil (or old man) but the embossing makes it difficult to pin down.

I'll post a couple of pics.

I'm stumped. To me it looks like a squirrel with butterfly wings, facing to the right. Is it a fancy cancel or just an obliteration? Let us know what you find out.

I believe it's probably a negative "N" cork but obscured by the embossing of the postal stationery. The N corks (both positive & negative) are known from New York at that time period. Thi is only an educated guess really but seems to make sense.

Lest I be called the new guy with an overactive imagination....
The man a facing right. The rightmost component is his jaw. Above that is his mouth (where the embossing in Washington's hair gives the effect of teeth). Once you see these components, near the top there are two eyes separated by a nose.
It's not THAT much of a stretch.

yeah it is...lol. It sort of dose look a little like Frankenstein looking up maybe a little but that would be the human brains' amazing ability to "matrix" or trying to make sense of visual cacophony as it were respectively so. Like I stated it was just a guess.

Edit:
As an afterthought, maybe you could familiarize yourself with 19th century fancy cancels and maybe find it in a reference book. Afterall you have probably stared at this longer than anyone ever so you would be able to spot a reasonable likeness? Just a thought. Cheers!
