I've recently acquired Revenue Stamps ranging from $.50 - $10,000. I can't seem to find any information on these whatsoever. I've conducted a search for revenue stamps, but received pages of results other than the stamps I have. I was hoping someone could give me some information on them? Most are dated between 1940 & 1963. They are all red in color. The larger denominations have serial numbers on them, some have "CILC" hand written on them. Any clue? Thanks

I know there were some proofs made of revenue stamp values in excess of $500, but no actual stamps issued.
I was wrong.

Yes! They look like those! Some are still connected to each other. I have $100 value ones that are connected and $1000 as well. |

Those are awesome! How did you come across them?
My 2009 Specialized catalog lists the 1957 $10,000 stamp as R714 used CV is $500 and the other 2 are 1958 #R732 $140 each. They appear stained in your photo but I think that's just shadows from the pic or on the plastic they're in.
Nice stuff and I love that set - been working on it a bit lately. It ran from 1940-1958 with the year as an overprint on all of them except the 1954 (low denominations) issue and the 1958 (high denominations) issue
1955-8 only had the $30 and higher issues. Probably why they didn't overprint the 1954 lower denominations so they could just keep using them. |

The first 3 are from 1957 & 1958. Obvious one being the overprinted series of 1957 which has a catalog value (not a real world value) of $500, the 2 without overprint are from 1958 with a catalog value of $140.00. Condition is everything in stamps and those aren't 2 bad but the one has some discoloring.
EDIT- after a better look it appears as if a couple have cut cancels which would decrease the value and the stains will seriously decrease the value. |

I don't think those are all stains as they kind of follow the background in the same pattern on a bunch of the pics.
I didn't notice the cut cancels either until you brought it up though.
Still really cool and probably not a part of most collections I would think. I know they aren't in mine LOL

Thanks for helping out. I was wondering if the three $1000 stamps which are connected worth more because they are together, or it really doesn't make a difference? Also, as stallzer mentioned these are cut cancels (just learned that), does it matter that most of them aren't actually completely perforated or cut all the way through? Most have the three lines on them, but didn't tear through the stamp all the way. Just wondering. |

Don't separate the stamps that are still together - definitely belong together and more valuable/desirable that way.
The one's not perforated all the way around are called straight edges - they came from the edge of the sheet they were printed on. They are less desirable than stamps that are perforated on all sides to most collectors. Not sure how revenue stamps of that size were printed (how many per sheet)
There are several revenue experts here that will probably chime in later.
This post would have been better placed in the US Back of Book section but I'm sure you didn't realize that when you posted.
Maybe a mod can move it as it will get more eyes interested in back of book stuff seeing it. Not everyone checks each section. |
