Another small town post office closes ... a lost lease is reportedly the reason ... but nevertheless one of the smaller post offices in the country ... and one that had been in operation since 1849:

Here's the current news article about its pending closure:

And a 2011 news article carried by the NY Times when it was in danger of closing a few years ago:

That's the North Hoosick post office just north of me in the above picture and the second smallest post office in the U.S. It's actually not closing down, but the hours are very restricted. It might be on the chopping block soon enough as the property is still for sale.

It's my local post office that is closing down - Hoosick, New York on rt. 7. The owner of the Big Moose Deli (tourist attraction and local eyesore) wants the extra space to make bathrooms. I use to be able to walk to this post office, but now I'll be driving to Pownal, VT or Petersburg, NY to buy stamps and mail items. The Hoosick Falls, NY post office rarely has enough stamps to mail a parcel and North Pownal, VT also has very limited hours.

Sorry. That Times-Union article is a bit confusing as they refer to both North Hoosick and Hoosick. Apparently the latter (as you stated) is the one closing:

As to whether or not the North Hoosick, NY post office is the second smallest in the country, the NY Times article from 2011 (posted above) made the following correction as a footnote:

Quote:
Correction: August 20, 2011

An article on Wednesday about the post office in North Hoosick, N.Y., which the Postal Service is considering closing, erroneously attributed a distinction to it. At 12 feet by 20 feet, it is not the second-smallest post office in the country. (The smallest one, at 7 feet by 8 feet, is in Ochopee, Fla. And at least one other post office is smaller than North Hoosick's — a 12-foot-by-14-foot one in Ophir, Colo.) The error was repeated in an accompanying picture caption.

In any event, I changed the title of this thread from "North Hoosick" to "Hoosick".

Interestingly, the Hoosick, NY post office has been in operation since 1807 (that's 207 years!) ... although certainly not at the same location, one can confidently say that it is the end of an era.

Welp, maybe the third or fourth smallest. Either way, it's pretty small inside - like a garden shed.

One of the older reincarnations of the Hoosick, NY post office is right across the street (rt 7). It's a small vacant building, but it doesn't have any parking and it's a busy intersection. As the Times Union article mentioned a couple of local politicians are trying to relocate the post office. I hope they have success and it's not the end.

Also the post office in Hoosick is on the far right side of that above photo, but you can't see it. That's an older photo of the building and the owner has all sorts of carved critters and statues all over the place including the roof. It's a complete chaotic mess.

jogil: Sort of - I'll be mailing out a few hundred covers tomorrow from there, but they won't have a special cachet.
