Just sharing this new oldie.

Its #27 Newfoundland from Harbour Grace April 12 1886 (faint cancel on front), back canceled at St Johns and Richmond Surrey April 27.

So by ship in 15 days to England? Wish I knew which one.

It has pretty beat up edges and the perforates on the stamp are badly toned, but to me, it rusty gold and beautiful just the way she is, eh?

Does anybody know the myths or truths on placing a stamp upside down? I seem to recall there was spycraft or love messages or something denoted by doing this back then. Anyone know Annie Stephens?

Tommy, there were a few Anne Stephen in the Richmnd, Surrey area at the time. The gravestone inventory link may provide some usefull info in your research. here is one sample: http://www.gravestonephotos.com/pub...crwidth=1200

Thanks to the posts.

I will "write no more"

Wert--got this from Vance auction. Post your 88 or send it to me, I'm happy to help. Is it 88a? It took me 15 years to find that stamp VF,NH, and then last year--I saw two in auctions back to back. Its a great stamp, very often missed in collections, and we collectors hate those open spots, eh?

According to the NSSC, there are three : 12 x 11.8 (common, over 5,000,000 printed) and 11.8 x 14.2 (also common) and 11.75 x 11.4 (rare--not sure of quantity). The first two are like $5 retail. The latter is like $500+
