In the process of going through massive amounts of stamps my dad collected. Seems as if long ago he purchased multiple peoples collections and gave up in the process of sorting them all

I scanned an image below to see if anyone knows if these are of any value.

Also, we have hundreds if not thousands, of stamps of China's leaders 1920-1940s. I am learning about reprints, over prints and surcharges but am overwhelmed! Is there a good guide for these to help us search for the ones that might be worth listing? I have been using hobbizine as a guide to help ID but perhaps there are better sites?

Thank you all!

Kathy

Kathy, there ought to be a Chinese catalog, but I do not know of one. However, there is a website that may be of help: www.stampworld.com.

Thats funny, I just came upon a bunch of loose used China junk blocks in an Ivory stamp book. There was also a customs stamp so my guess is the original collector got lots of foreign packages or maybe even worked for Customs.

I found some great info including some values just by searching "china junk stamps" on google. You can also look at sold China stamps on ebay.

Kathy: check your local library for a copy of the Scott catalog that includes the "C" part of the alphabet. There were at least three different printings of the "junk" stamps and also multiple issues of the Dr. Sun Yat Sen and other leader stamps. There is also a Chinese catalog called the Chan catalog. You might inquire about it with the staff at Michael Rogers, who is an expert in Asian stamps ( www.michaelrogersinc.com ).

Another option for you is the list of philatelic libraries on the web site of the American Philatelic Society. I note there is a library in the greater Dallas area. ( www.stamps.org/Philatelic-Libraries ). Myself, I don't recommend www.ebay.com/b/260/" rel="nofollow">ebay for this type of research.

I definitely would not use ebay to research the printings since so many listings are just dead wrong. I would just use it to see what sells, and for how much.

This site helped me determine all my blocks are from the second Peking printing. It has good information on what to look for to differentiate the three printings.

When I went to put the stamps in my old International Album I noticed it only has spaces for one of the three printings with no mention of the others. I'm more or less new to collecting WW, so I don't know what to expect when it comes to which stamps will have spaces. While they can't include everything, I thought the old blue Internationals were pretty thorough.

raymodj: I bought my Scott Blue Internationals in the mid-1980s. At that time, the Blues were thorough, or close, only for post 1940 issues. I was disappointed with the 1840-1940 sections. But I've been using blank quadrilled pages for years; and with re-fitting; even have worked in some Scott Speciality & Schaubeck pages. I've got a bunch of the between-the-world-wars China issues. I know I'll need another blank page or two whenever I get around to re-mounting those.

I bought a MA's China Stamp Catalog some time ago which was very helpful because it divided all such issues very well and had much information on them that was very helpful especially for stamp identification. However, I sold it when I stopped collecting Chinese stamps.

According to the Chan catalogue, there was only one printing of the Junk type 2 Cents surcharged 1 Cent. It was priced at near minimum value in the 2010 edition. Chan does list a variety missing the stop after 'Ct', at $HK40 used.

There was only one type of the 16 Cents surcharged 5 Cents. Chan valued it at $HK3 used. No varieties recorded.

There were numerous printings of the others. We'd need high resolution close-up scans to be sure.
