I have these three Chile stamps, Scott #78. In Scott there is just one variety. I note however that many South Americans show 3 different types. Can anyone help me identify what I have and explain the difference in the varieties/types?

I do not have a specialized Chile catalog. As you noted, Scott only lists one variety.

My 2007 Michel South America only lists 2 varieties for the non-overprinted stamp: color with metallic gloss, color without metallic gloss (for unused stamps, the latter catalogs for ~50% more). Michel does not give a used price for either varieties of the non-overprinted stamp. A footnote states something to the effect that cancelled (non-overprinted) stamps are CTOs (I assume they mean remainders).

There are 3 different overprints/surcharges for this stamp. But perhaps the 3 varieties you mentioned are some other type of variety? Hopefully somebody who specializes in Chile can chime in.

There are 3 issues (printings) of this stamp :

1) January 1905 (200.000 stamps) - Green & Black
2) September 1908 (1 million stamps) - Green with Bronze (metallic gloss) & Black
3) March 1909 (2 millions stamps) - Olive green & Black.

In 1910, 1 million of those stamps were overprinted "Islas de Juan Fernandez" and in some cases with new face value. The overprint is red.

Another 2 millions stamps were overprinted IMPUESTO in black (1908-10) for use as revenue/tax stamp.

Only exist about 200.000 stamps without overprint.

Thank you Jorge, I was actually betting it would be you with the answer. It would appear then that my 3 stamps are all of the olive green & black variety, 78b, or in "Album de sellos postales de Chile" 79b? Actually, the closer I look there are bronze specks on all 3, making them 78a or 79a.
