Hi guys...I was looking at and organizing some of my Provinces stamps and was trying to date my P.E.I. Scott #9...First I looked in "Unitrade" and it classified the date as between 1868 - 1870...Well, I went to "Library and Archives Canada" web site...They date this Scott #9 as 1864 ...Now, tell me why their is a 4 or 5 years difference in dating...

Robson Lowe gives the date of issue of the 4d. grey-black on yellowish paper as 1869, the 4d. black on white paper as 1870, and the 4-1/2d. as [June 1] 1870. The 4d. was printed by Charles Whiting in London. The 4-1/2d. by the British American Bank Note Co. Jerry

I've not seen this before. The stamp was printed by typography in sheets of 30. My guess, is that it is the edge of the plate picked up some ink and transferred it to the paper. Jerry

I believe the dates Jarnick gives are correct, from Robson Lowe. There is no way the stamp was issued in 1864. Records of dates of issue were not kept, and covers and dated stamps from PEI are so rare it is difficult to establish an earliest known date.

As for the frame varieties Ralph Trimble explained it here:
