Found this civil war cover thought I would share it. I thought it was very nice. It has a Union flag embossed on the top left corner. It is hard to see but the flag has a single large star with a circle of smaller stars around it in the star field area and one in each corner. It appears to be from Beaufort South Carolina. Jan 14 1864, headed to Lancaster County, TN. Looking further this may be Lancaster County Pennsylvania

If anyone knows anything more about this I would love to find out. Unfortunately no contents and no return address.

As far as the addressee is concerned, it is addressed to Ebenezer S. Killian of Hinkletown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The post office at Hinkletown, PA is discontinued; it was in operation from 1826-1914, so it fits within the period of your cover.

The addressee, Ebenezer S. Killian (1828-1913), is referred to here showing his gravesite and list of immediate relatives:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/f...GRid=7605499

He served in the Civil War as a Private in the 178th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company B:

Quote:
On Nov. 8, 1862, young Ebenezer S. Killian was drafted into the military, donning the blue kersey uniform of a Union soldier to take up arms in a struggle to preserve freedom and end slavery.

The Lancaster County man was made a member of a local militia organization, the 178th Pennsylvania Infantry. He became a private in Company B of that regiment. Luckily for Killian, the 178th was a nine-month regiment, so he was mustered out on July 27, 1863, and returned home.

His occupation shows that he was a laborer, or more specifically, a shoemaker, by trade. He was a lifelong resident of Lancaster County, PA later living in East Cocalico and Ephrata, PA, the latter community is where he died.
