I saw this for sale, and felt sad for it : 150 years old and missing the stamp...like walking around without your head..

I was thinking to buy it (all things Newfoundland is my addiction) and maybe someone out there has the missing stamp that was removed and matches the cancel? please check your collections..

kidding of course...

Wert,

That is the question rattling around in my mind!

I would need to research postal rates from 1868, but my initial hypothesis is that it was not registered to Canada, so probably low postage. And it appears to be a "portrait" rectangle stamp frame. So it might have been an 1861 era pence stamp like #17 or #18?
Probably not an 1866 era "cent" issue because those portrait rectangle stamps were 10 cent or 12 cents
It could also have been an 1868 3 cent #33 or #34.

The blue envelope is also more common that I have seen with the pence issues.

who knows?

It could be a scott 27 also...that was an 1865 stamp if memory serves me right...?
Tommy...just thinking...that cover has left some perf. Marks where the stamp was...maybe possible to clasify the perf of the removed stamp...?

Tommy...here is a brain teaser for you or anyonre else...what NFLD stamp has the price designation on a stamp 7 times....???

It's happened before, I think it was an old Norwegian cover, mucho dollars, one of the stamps was missing & a collector spotted the missing stamp, cancel matched exactly. Took several years before they were re-united.

$11.00 start price / shipping for a cover without a stamp? I wouldn't have the nerve to list that for more than $2.50 - shipping included.

Wert : #40 (seal from 1876/79) does. Good one--enjoyed that.

YeaPolska : wow, that is cool and what I was imagining for this cover. i'm sort of toying with investing $11 just for kicks and as a mission to find a needle in a haystack. though hard to justify price as CanadaStamp noted...though the letter is 150 years old...

Tommy...As you can see from my analysis software, I see a stamp that was removed that is wider than it is high..That should narrow it down for you..See picture(s) below.

I am guessing it was No. 25 or 26, a horizontal 5c Harp Seal stamp. I think 5c was the folded letter rate to Canada in 1868.

Amazing Wert--can I come over and have you scan all my covers??

I think BeeSee is right--so everybody look for their puzzle piece to see if it fits...
