Note to parents: As a school boy I was always at the top of the class in geography (and some history) because I started collecting when I was 5 years old. I could also recognize languages much more readily than just about anyone else in my cohort.

There is no better way to learn geography than by collecting world wide as a youngster. The knowledge of geography today is pathetic.

History is very interesting for me. Collecting a country stamps and with the internet you can learn so much about a country history. Then the hobby is more than sorting and mounting stamps, it's a great source of knowledge.

Sometimes, my wife will ask me a question, and will be surprised I know the answer. She will ask "How did you know that?" I will just smile in return. She knows that smile means "I learned it from collecting stamps."

I think a venn diagram would show a massive overlap between philately, geography, and history. Seems like people are attracted to stamp collecting from these other two fields.
