PF cert calling the stamp a "220var"



I came across this auction on ebay today and found it quite interesting. According to the seller, this is the first copy of 220b to ever be certified as "genuine" (certificate issued by the Philatelic Foundation). He also goes on to list a number of references who have examined the stamp and helped with his research.

I'd like to hear the experts' opinion on this. Is one certificate enough to call this stamp "genuine" or should it also be examined by the APS, et al?

Am I alone in my feeling that if genuine, this should have been given a lot more press and brought to auction by a major auction house? If this were my stamp, I am certain that's the approach I would have taken ...

Older certification. IMO this is an inking thing, certainly not a repeatable plate position. I have one with cap on right only (albeit with a few condition issues) that I will sell for a much lower price!

A search of the PF cert database confirms the seller's contention. This is the only cert in the DB that uses the phrase "cap on right 2" without ascribing it to an inking anomaly. The other items submitted as 220b or "cap on right 2" variety (I found six, not two) look, well, like inking anomalies (all different).

Older Certification? It's only 6 years old~ What would consider a good certification? One issued yesterday? Also, PF certifications are considered the creme de la creme. APEX is good, but doesn't have the cachet of the PF certs.

Wow. I meant that that in the last few years the cap on right opinions have been evolving. Would PF issue the same cert today? I could be wrong but understanding is that there is no cap on right plate position.

We've discussed this stamp before -- all the way back to 2011. Here's the previous thread (advance to the bottom of page 1 and continued on page 2). The stamp has had various ebay listings from $12.5K to $50K to $95K and now it appears it is again listed at $95K:

unique should sell for something north of 500,000 - maybe Afinsa Investments could use it

I got the same stamp but with double caps..Can I sell mine for $190,000.00...haha

Old news, the seller has been trying to sell this for 6 years now and still hasn't. One would think that the price would be coming down rather than going up, but..................

All very interesting thoughts. Hello all. I'm the owner of the 220b, Cap On Right. I'll gladly answer any questions you might have regarding this stamp. The listing is on ebay, so if you have a few, take the time out to read all of the information and view all images. I did extensive research on this find because I believe these caps were intentional in order to distinguish the different shades of red used. Also, If a second 220b is certified, Scott WILL reinstate the 220b into it's catalog. I look forward to your comments. RC, NY

So you are thinking that the cap on right was part of the actual plate and not just an inking issue?

Surprised to see why the seller hasn't sent for a most recent certification if this such a valuable stamp... no grading needed, even a proof verification might have convinced a buyer?

Q/ Do we know anything about the plate positions of the caps? Single? Multiple?

If the cap was part of the plate, then there should be many of these stamps, and/or there should be articles in the philatelic journals that discuss this. I'm sure the seller has researched this and can provide citations.
