DECEMBER 10TH design of.1870-1871 BARTON MARYLAND- PIEDMONT COAL & IRON CO.
BARTON ALLEGHENY CO., MD. On Scott #U46 or #U45 on cream stationery.

Here is the whole unaltered image of the full cover to see the actual color of paper.

It does have a rather fanciful watermark in the paper. (Shown below). Taken with a Fugi FinePix S700 Digital Camera and the subject at hand is held obliquely to my desk lamp.

However the U44, U45 & U46 are just the design designations of the catalog denoting many "different" issues with the same (or very similar) of many examples.

For instance:~

- Design U44 could be one of ~ #U159, #U60,#161,#+162
- Design U45 could be one of ~ #U163, #U164, #U165, #U166, #167
- Design U46 could be one of ~ #U168, #U169, #U170, #U171

I'm thinking it's a U161 (Cream) you?

Scanned a@ 1200dpi to better show the postal design: {No manipulation at all}

Also, if it helps any I thought that the Watermarks were easier to make out in B&W so I attached the same images of them but cropped down, darkened a little buit and made into B&W images.

Design is surely U45, paper probably cream, so SC: U165, although maybe just very old/discoloured amber or even white paper.

About that watermark you worked so hard at getting us scans.

It is a watermark #2. If there is a star out to the right side of the fancy "US POD", it would be watermark #5. If, instead of a star, there were the numbers "82", then it would be watermark #6.

"It's a star."

Well, then it can't be a U165. No watermark 5's are known for U165.

It's got to be U163 or U164.

APEX would be pleased to examine this item and provide a definitive answer to the color. The Die number/Scott type is easy from a decent scan but there are too many variables for a definitive answer on color based on a scan.
