As suggested in the earlier post, catalog values can be placed on stamps in any number of ways.

Using post-1940 US commemorative stamps as an example, a mint single is typically catalog valued at 25-cents, and a plate block of 4 at $1. Of course, that creates something of a dilemma when you wish to apply a catalog value to a non-plate block of 4, or 4 single stamps, which comes out to the same amount. Also, if one had 1000 copies of that same common stamp, it wouldn't be worth anything near $250 (25-cents per stamp) as the "catalog value" is only an estimate of the labor costs involved for a dealer to maintain an inventory to provide a specific stamp to a collector, and is not indicative real secondary market values which are typically only a fraction of their "catalog value".

HargroveBrian, this makes it more difficult. Yes, with foreign stamps SOMETIMES the value of a block is the sum of the individuals, other times it is not. It all depends on the issue. Also, lots of times stamps are valued higher in the country of origin and that may make a big difference.
Still, if you could post an image it might help. Also, if you can check on the Delcampe website. Since it is Europe based it has more info. It also has many more German "subdivisions" than E-bay, making it easier to find things!

If a stamp is priced at the catalog minimum, a multiple is probably not worth the catalog minimum multiplied by the number of stamps in the block. The minimum really doesn't reflect the stamps value, it is just the accepted way to say it's not worth much! I really prefer the use of a letter abbreviation for the minimum value instead of giving it an arbitrary number because it is way too easy for folks to grab 100 worthless stamps and say "the catalog says they are worth 100 times .25 cents or $2.50!! Gosh I'm rich!" LOL And I have a bridge I'd like to sell you if you believe that's what they are worth!
