I rescued a few covers from a mess of stuff in a shoe box. This Randolph, NY caught my eye because of the star. Also thought it might be a dead post office...Not so. Randolph is a bustling metropolis, population 1,200. This has a nice #307 attached. Nicely centered. There are some other interesting, some foreign, covers. But most have condition issues. Dirty like the #307 above or completely tattered and spent.

Well I cant answer your question directly but I will say not to float those stamps off the covers as any bit of information will lend credibility and the whole story of the cover so don't do that. Also if you could pot larger images that would help immensely! I loke your little horde there by the way so congratulations! -Jeff |

ILS, I just noticed I messed up the image of the #307 cover. It was supposed to be a shot of the entire cover, like the others shown. Sorry. Later tonight I will fix it. |

The #307 is a registered cover (2 cents postage + 8 cents registration), or was at least intended as one. The #56/56 is a registry number. The cover should have said "registered" on it somewhere, though. |

Another interesting point as it relates to the postmark shown on the previously posted cover. The Gloucester C.H. (Court House), Virginia postmark appears to be dated 1903. According to Jim Forte's Postal History Website, the post office closed in 1893, which must be an error: http://www.postalhistory.com/postof...rchtype=word |

The probable scenario was that the name of the post office was changed from Gloucester Court House to just Gloucester but the cancellation device was continued in use from the previous name. Many post offices are listed as closed in the listing books when really the name just changed in one little way: for example: Plattsburg to Plattsburgh, Willsborough to Willsboro, Greenriver to Green River. Plattsburgh and Willsboro are in NY while Green River was in Vermont. |

Whatever else you do, get rid of those paperclips. Leaving them on the cover is just asking for rust and trouble.

You folks are great, thank you. I thought it should have been a registered mailing, but obviously wasn't sure. wt1, great stuff!
Umm..., about the paper clip... that's on me. I use it to hang the covers for taking pictures to post here. |
