The Mendocino Post Office opened on Dec 1 1858, and in the fall of 1958 was sceduled to move into a new and modern post office after 69 years in the same building.With a post office dedication and a centinial, The Mendocino Lions club sponsered the ceremoies and the souveiner cachet. The William H. Buckley designed Overland Mail issue was choosen to stamp the covers. The Post Office dedication took place on the first day of use of Scott 1120, and as a special feature of the celebration the POD authorized the use of it's Highway Post Office Vehicle No. 1. The cashet envelopes and the insert were printed in the 82 year old office of the Mendocino Beacon.
Seventeen years later, another special cancel was used at the Mendocino Post Office, a First day of use State Of Mendocino Independence issue.
