Great books showing up in here. On occasion, I have been lucky enough to get books that were being discarded from the local library. Here is a book, I got brand new some time ago. I know it is postcard related, but, it still has some philatelic value as well and worth its' weight in gold. Chimo Bujutsu |

Well it's not in my library per say but I did go across the river to our library and found a whole 3 books on stamp collecting. The newest is from 1974. I checked it out for a quick read, It's called: Collecting Stamps by Paul VilliardHere is the cover: It's not very good either. It's put together poorly and jumps around a lot. It's lacking pictures of what the author's describing instead of random modern stamp issues of the 70's. Just an odd book on the subject. |

I am stoked to have picked up a few books this past weekend from the Northwest Philatelic Library.
The first, The United States Ten Cent Stamps of 1855-1859 – By Neinkin has complete plate reconstructions, postal history, and postmarks found on the 10c issue.
The second book is on the 1869 Pictorials, By Jon Rose. It's part of the Linn's handbook series.
The third book is also by Jon Rose and it's on classic US imperf stamps.
Finally, I got two books on cancellations. First, a book on RPO & boat/ship cancellations in the US and second, a book on Machine cancellations from (I think) 1871-1925 by Hamner.
Plenty of good reading!

I picked up some cheap literature at a stamp club meeting:
Norsk dampskipspost (Norwegian steampship post) by Sigurd Løkeberg. Bevæpning og våpen I det norske postverk (how mail carriers were armed way back) by Rolf Rasch-Engh. Skip og post I Hamburgruten 1853 - 1865 (Ships and post in the route to Hamburg) by Tore Gjelsvik. Minner fra krigstiden I Øst-Finnmark 1944/45 (the postal situation in Finnmark during 1944/45) by Arnold Tannvik. Katalog over Norges byposter (Catalog Norwegian local post) by Bjørn Schøyen and Finn Aune.

Picked this up for $10 today at a stamp store somewhat local. Would have bought more stuff but the guy and his miserable wife weren't interested in moving out of their seats. |

Hi TF1,
Welcome to the group. That looks like a super buy. Not only do the colour illustrations look very high quality, they also look to be "tipped in" to the pages in the classic method of inserting colour reproductions into a book. I am green with envy.

Mike33 So the guy was Mr Nice and his wife was the Witch from Wichata. Funny how they've stayed together. |

LOL - no the guy wasn't really Mr anything. This was in Massachusetts. I had asked if he had any US National Binders and he said probably upstairs but can't get to it now (I was only customer in the store) Asked if they had any National pages from 86+ - answer - probably but I can't get to it now. Send an email and we'll see if we can find some. Yeah sure, how about I just go on ebay and buy from someone that wants to sell something. |

Quote: Here is a book I bought some time ago. The front cover is blank, so, I scanned the spine of it to show the title etc. It was published in 1920 and is also a collectible. Bujutsu, I found a copy of the William Smith book you posted last year, the History of the Post Office in British North America, today at the old book and paper show in Toronto. I was thrilled to find it until I saw the price they were asking. Wayyyyyy out of my budget. Then I noticed the book plate on the inside opposite the title page. The book had belonged to Robert Laird Borden, our eighth Prime Minister and leader of our country during the First World War. Guess I'd have been paying for the provenance, and not so much the book. I'll keep looking. |

That's a real handy book jamesw. I have a soft copy of that one. Regarding the book "The Post Office In North America", I agree about the pricing, but, I bit the bullet and paid $75.00 for mine from an auction. I figured it was well worth it in the long run. Don't pay that much that often I can tell you Chimo Bujutsu |

Just received a few days back and is a wonderful book, "The World of Classic Stamps 1840-70" by James MacKay from 1972. Hundreds of color and B&W photos of the "blue chip" stamps and has really helped kindle my interest in the earliest European stamp issues. It has been a briefg topic of discussion before on the forum. The enlightening wiki article on the author doesn't detract, too much, from the work: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_A._MackayJohn |
