I too liked the clip of the boy. It could have been me because it was about at that age 56 years ago that I started.I was 13 years old. My parents were just as excited as I was to sort approvals and stamps that I bought with paper route money at the kitchen table. To put into my U.S. album which I still have today with the stamps still in it.

As I recall, there was an indication that something previously unknown (presumably about the 2015 stamp program) might be made public during the program. While I watched it only once, I do not recall hearing any newsworthy tidbit. Did I miss something?

I think the "scoop" was that Bill Gross was the buyer of the "unvert" Jenny sheet mentioned. Previously the buyer of that sheet had been undisclosed:

This was well done and should benefit the hobby. My only two regrets:
(1) Bill Gross's "trade" of the inverted Jenny plate block for the 1c Z grill to complete his 19th century U.S collection wasn't mentioned; this would have been an interesting story for a wider audience.
(2) When the PMG is mentioning the first U.S. postage stamps, the images on the screen are definitely not Scott 1 and 2. Not being a collector of essays, ephemera, etc., I am not sure what they are; perhaps an expert can educate me on them.
Other than those two minor quibbles, it was a really good piece.

I was in an antique mall today where one of the more prominent vendors is a fellow who sells stamps and postcards. He wasn't there at the time. The phone rang while I was there and the person who answered the phone said "Jerry is really a popular guy today." My guess is that the Sunday Morning special is bringing old collections out of the woodwork. I wonder what it is like for stamp dealers across the country. I will have to ask some of them at our local stamp meeting on Thursday.

I was a little disappointed. Too much focus on the high dollar story and not enough discussion of the hobby from an average collectors's perspective.

Suffice it to say, I don't spend hours collecting stamps for them to be hoovered up by Bill Gross for a "big" check. Anyone considering a similar strategy should take a second look at the lottery or craps.

That's no real surprise. Expensive stamps fire the imagination of the average non collector. And Bill Gross is very famous in the non philatelic world. I wish more attention had been paid to the kids (they filmed a lot that day) but the non collecting world would probably fine average collectors a bit on the boring side. Alas.
