Yes, that is his signature. I checked several other signed covers. I liked this one because of the stamp and the plate number. Covers with this cancel are documented in Roessler's "Standard Historical Souvenir Airmail Catalog" at a value of $5.00. I paid a little more than that.

Apparently Byrd signed a lot of philatelic items. A few months back I saw a whole page of the various Byrd stamps signed by him, perhaps 25 in total.

They are not exactly rare. They still fetch a good price (couple of hundred dollars). I've forgotten how much I paid for this one, but I got it from Mccusker's during one of his 40% off sales.

Not rare at all. He was a prolific autograph signer, but he's still highly popular to this day so the prices are strong. I have one for sale on a #10-size event cover for $50. if anyone interested.
