USCGC Alex Haley (WMEC-39) 26 Mar 2006 PM ISC Military Post Office Kodiak AK 99615. I've seen a couple of Alex Haley Covers & thought why name a USCGC after an author? But now I know why. Do you?

The ship is not named after "author" Alex Haley, but "Chief Journalist" Alex P. Haley 1921-1992: http://www.uscg.mil/pacarea/cgcAlex.../history.asp

He was a 20 year veteran of the Coast Guard, retired as a Chief Petty Officer.
