Have received this South Africa Boer war era stamp with army field po postmark. I can't find a reference to its value. Yet interestingly had a price of 20 pounds with it. Can anyone tell me its real value? I normally list them on cover and have not seen this one before.

Duncan Not an expert, to make a massive understatement, but these are revenues used as local issues from March 1902. Listed by SG under Transvaal, and then Volksrust. Unfortunately, my Commonwealth catalogue dates from 1975, so the price of £3.50 isn't hugely helpful! Not listed in my more recent SOTW - doubtless too obscure. Geoff |

It used to be listed under Volkrust but is now listed under General issues of Transvaal as it was the normal Revenue stamps used in various Transvaal offices. It is now cat. at £45,

We are in a world of fakery with these Dutch South African stamps. Pairs of mint high values would make me very edgy! |

Wow thanks all for the great help & scans of the mint set, is the £45 value for mint or used? I could not find any on ebay. Does the army postmark help it? So its worth listing it on the bay in my store then, should I start it at 99 cents? |

No one seems to have mentioned it so my apologies for being brutally honest, but the stamp in the initial post, regardless of catalogue value, is in such poor condition that the catalogue value becomes almost meaningless.
That's just the way it is, sorry.

Hi Londonbus1 thanks for being honest I just wonder how someone could be still asking £20 with the browning around it which is why I posted it. I want to know also is it scarce or not I generally list older stamps on covers on ebay not loose stamps like this. |

Depending on which catalog you use.... my S.G. catalog lists that stamp under South Africa/Transvaal/Postal Fiscal Stamps/1900-02 Fiscal stamps as per your example with a V.R.I overprint. S.G. F1 1d pale blue I'd expect the Field Post Office cancel to be unusual as normally stamps of Great Britain were used at these field locations so probably worthy of a second opinion. |

Thanks scotzm. Yes re the the Field Post Office cancel on this particular stamp I have not seen any on this stamp on Boer war covers altough the postmark itself is fairly common on other types of sa stamps on Boer censor covers 1900-02 |

I'd be a little concerned that the foxing/rust/whathaveyou might spread, no? |

The foxing is what makes it worthless. If you have the brown foxing in your stamp collection a dealer would knock down the price of the collection because of it. I am undecided what to do with the stamp itself. |

Tough choice. I am pretty ruthless about not introducing foxing to my own accumulation. I don't sell, so I haven't had to make my peace with selling something that I would not put in my own collection. |
