DC STAMPS ----To answer your question ,how to determine genuine from forgery . Here is a closer scan showing details .
I quote from Varro E. Tyler ,when he is talking about Central Lithuania stamps "The counterfeits prepared by a photolithographic process from the rather crude genuine stamps are basically impossible to distinuish, except for a slight loss of detail," That is what I used to make this below page .I have one more scan but the resizer isn't working on my computer .

Interesting floortrader, thanks for sharing -
I would say the copy on the right is showing more than a 'slight loss of detail' as compared to the left one, basically all the details are gone..

btw - I hope you left St. Louis Stamp Show with great satisfaction - and without needing to sell your wife

Thanks floortrader

I have Verro Tyler's book and have seen the reference, but he has it under the Scott#J1 stamp, I am never sure whether the same criteria can be translated to all Central Lithuanian stamps.

When I have some time, I will take a closer look at my CL stamps to see if I notice such a differences.

I have been on the lookout for A. G Pacholczyk's book, but like many out of print philatelic books, they are often harder to find than the stamps themselves.

While we are discussing Central Lithuania. Here are some Central Lithuanian Stamps which aren't often seen (Although I fully expect all of them to be forgeries).

I'm on the lookout for this too. I had the chance to buy it way back when it was still in print but I balked at paying 65 pounds. Now that I think I want it - nothing.

From what I know of forgeries, anything on a very white, thick paper is a forgery made up for the packet market.

What about perforation? Is that a determining factor for forgeries? Scott says perf 11.5 is the norm. Most of mine are actually 11.33 (close enough) but I do have some perf 10.5 as mentioned in this thread:

https://goscf.com/t/32436#32436

Could the 10.5 also be genuine imperf stamps privately perforated?

Thanks

According to Scott (which isn't necessarily the Bible on these) these issues come in 3 perf varieties 11.5x12, 12.5x11.5 and 14.

I measured the perfs and they are as follows:

Scott #13a (2m on 15k invert) is 12 x 11.5
Scott #15a (4m on 20k invert) is 11.5 x 12.5
Scott #16a (4m on 30k invert) is 11.5 x 12.5
Scott # 21 (10m on 2auk) is 14 (this is the high value one).

Actually, I don't doubt that the base Lithuanian stamp is probably genuine, rather I am unsure of the overprint and the cancellation.

Michael

DCStamps, I am referring to Scott 1-6. My 2009 Scott lists them as 11.5 and imperf, yet I also have some with perf 10.5

Yvert lists 11.5 or imperf, as well, for Scott 1-6 (Yv22-27). No mention of private perfs.

Lyapin is the same...
