Does anyone object to me posting pictures of precancels for the purpose of identifying items I have that are neat and/or unique?
I have quite a few stamps to go through, and I'm choosing to start with the cancelled & precancelled stamps, as I personally find the added character of cancels makes them the most appealing.
Also, if there's an introduction area someone could point me to. Thanks!

Welcome.
Under the SC Family Topics section, there is an Introduce Yourself Here forum. Should be near the top of the Home tab. |

Ok Great! I will post as time permits. Here's some 1/2c - 6c I pulled out of one particular group of envelopes. There might be more as I go through other envelopes & books... Let me know if larger pictures (less stamps) is preferred. Thanks everyone. |

Jessem, I do not know much about precancels, but two of these are regular stamps. The Roosevelt block left bottom is not a precancel; it looks like it was used on a package. Also, the orange 6 cent perfin ( above Rahway ) is a regular stamp! The pair of 1.5 cent stamps ( 5&6 row 2 ) are also regular stamps with a somewhat unusual cancel!

Thanks for the info, Peter! I wasn't sure about the group that says "BACK BAY ANNEX", or perforated ones. I do know the Roosevelt block is not, it just happened to be in the vicinity when I was loading up the scanner. Was curious if anyone had any comments about that one. |

Here's a few more 1/2c - 6c that escaped the first round. I believe the 1/2 cent group says Hinsdale, Il. |

Ok thank you Donald! Well this should do it for the 1/2c-6c range. I probably won't be able to resume posting pictures for a of couple days. This group came out of a couple albums I have. |

The 'Kans' is not a precancel; it is an anti-theft device. In the late 20s many post offices in Kansas were being turned over by gangsters who would high-tail it out of the state and sell them elsewhere. So to discourage them, these overprints were produced, which could only be used within the state borders. The story goes that they had to abandon the scheme because the inhabitants of Kansas were so suspicious that they thought they were being scammed with 'used' stamps and refused to accept them.
There was a similar scheme in Nebraska. |

Bamra1, Thanks for sharing that. It's very interesting learning about the history behind these stamps. Less than two weeks ago I was an infant who knew nothing about stamps. Didn't know what a precancel was. Never heard of a Scotts guide. Since then I've been reading, reading, reading and it's been very interesting. Sometimes it's frustrating work, a lot of work actually, but it's fun never the less. Here's the .07 precancels... Have I hit anything out of the ordinary yet? To be up front about my intentions with these stamps, I aim to sell them. I will lean on the people here for help as I sort through them, and in return they will get first crack. Then it's off to ebay. |

None of the 10c stamps in your last scan are precancels. The postmarks with the city/state names (last stamp on each row) are referred to as "roller cancels" or "box cancels" and were typically applied to parcels or packages to streamline the cancellation process. One of the quickest ways to tell if you have a precancel or a box cancel is to check for vertical lines. Precancels will almost never have a vertical line; most box cancels will. The other clue is to determine if the city/state name fits within the size of the stamp. If it doesn't, it's almost certainly NOT a precancel. A number of articles on precancel collecting can be found here. You may find some of it to be interesting reading: http://www.precancels.com/getting-started/ |

Quote: None of the 10c stamps in your last scan are precancels. Thanks for the info, wt1, and the link. I'll check it out in my down time while I'm unable to work on pictures... How about the second picture of 9c, do you know if any of those precancels? I thought the top pair might be something I seen called "silent cancels" Thanks again. 11c precancels: 12c: |
