Time to get this thread back up to the top, gosh darn it!

I just finally finished imaging the last of the several pages of cancels I hand picked out of the bulk hoard last November at CHICAGOPEX.

Outstanding. I especially liked the boxed "War Tax" cancel and a Simon de Visser that I hadn't seen before.

The T.G. & Co. is a printed provisional cancel for Thomas Gorman & Co, one of the private die match stamp companies. To the best of my knowledge no one has figured out the "subject to 21/2 per cent tax" marking, although they have been discussed at times. Not such a common marking.

Yup. That was the first time I've seen this one. The oval and bold SdeV cancels are the ones usually found.

Is it possible there is more than one "T. G & Co." cancel? Eric attributes it as Tufts, Grosvenor & Co. and has it under proprietary medicine.

My info comes from the Beaumont handbook; it matches exactly and is the only T.G. listed. I don't know where Eric got his info from.

Bump! It's not much but this came in today. Does anybody recognize it? JRS? IRS?

Nice one, southpaw. J.R.S. is James Ross Snowden, Prothonotary of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. "Prothonotary" is chief clerk.

I'm not sure where I first saw it, southpaw. I know there are a couple of examples on Dan's web site, and it may well have been there. I recall that I had tried to identify the very distinctive cancel for quite a while and simply ran across it one day.

Just arrived today. Wasn't cheap but oh so gorgeous. One of the most ornate monogram cancels I have seen, possibly "D & Co"?

Here's a black & white representation of the cancel shifted slightly, so the "& Co" is more apparent.

Dan, I was the underbidder on that monogram cancel. I had something going on that night and had to bid early or not bid at all. So I bid high but was afraid, correctly, that it still wouldn't be enough. But I'm glad you got it. At least it will be on display on your website.

Well you pushed me higher than I thought it would go, but not beyond what I was willing to pay.

This and the bulk cancel lot (shown in another thread) were the two items I really wanted. Early on I had designs on a few of the other bulk lots, but they went higher than I was willing to pay, especially as early in the night it was apparent I would have to pay for the big cancel lot, so those had to go by the wayside.

Let's get this back on top. Maybe it will get Dan to quickly image some of his Chicagopex finds. While you guys were braving the midwest snow, I was feeling guilty for attending our little ol' Asheville bourse on a nice sunny saturday. Not too much to show, just this nice jumbo R7a and an R13 for their cancels. I also picked up four CDVs for their backs and several silks. Slim pickins indeed.
