Outstanding. I especially liked the boxed "War Tax" cancel and a Simon de Visser that I hadn't seen before. |

The T.G. & Co. is a printed provisional cancel for Thomas Gorman & Co, one of the private die match stamp companies. To the best of my knowledge no one has figured out the "subject to 21/2 per cent tax" marking, although they have been discussed at times. Not such a common marking. |

Quote: Simon de Visser that I hadn't seen before. Yup. That was the first time I've seen this one. The oval and bold SdeV cancels are the ones usually found. Eric attributes it as Tufts, Grosvenor & Co. and has it under proprietary medicine. |

My info comes from the Beaumont handbook; it matches exactly and is the only T.G. listed. I don't know where Eric got his info from. |

Bump! It's not much but this came in today. Does anybody recognize it? JRS? IRS? |

Nice one, southpaw. J.R.S. is James Ross Snowden, Prothonotary of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. "Prothonotary" is chief clerk. |

I'm not sure where I first saw it, southpaw. I know there are a couple of examples on Dan's web site, and it may well have been there. I recall that I had tried to identify the very distinctive cancel for quite a while and simply ran across it one day. |

Just arrived today. Wasn't cheap but oh so gorgeous. One of the most ornate monogram cancels I have seen, possibly "D & Co"? Here's a black & white representation of the cancel shifted slightly, so the "& Co" is more apparent. |

Dan, I was the underbidder on that monogram cancel. I had something going on that night and had to bid early or not bid at all. So I bid high but was afraid, correctly, that it still wouldn't be enough. But I'm glad you got it. At least it will be on display on your website. |

Well you pushed me higher than I thought it would go, but not beyond what I was willing to pay. This and the bulk cancel lot (shown in another thread) were the two items I really wanted. Early on I had designs on a few of the other bulk lots, but they went higher than I was willing to pay, especially as early in the night it was apparent I would have to pay for the big cancel lot, so those had to go by the wayside. |
