Here are two sisters from 1897. Surcharged stamps were used during a shortage of Cabot 1 cent stamps.

At first blush, the surcharged stamps look alike. Two subtle differences though make one #75 and the other #76i (both Newfoundland of course--what else is there to collect?)

Enjoy--and please share if you have this stamp or a variant. There are lots of them out there.

Nice covers Tommy. You mention "subtle differences" between these stamps. I notice that the catalogue pricing differences are not too subtle!

Scottamer:

Exactly. The stamp is an example of how being armed with information can make a big differences--as is the case with many stamps of course. even now, I look at the two and have to remind myself of the font difference and the spacing gap. imagine these stamps in a pile of others (with one misclassified) at a stamp show, eh?

Wert : I meant as individual stamps, that there are lots out there. hoping that someone on the board reaches for the Newfoundland pile, and scans one or two. I would love to see the 72p re-entry, though I don't focus on re-entries at this stage
