Davo has released a line of self-adhesive mounts. I recieved a promotional pack of 4 from Stanley Gibbons. They are "Hawid" style top loading mounts in clear and black. I used two of the clear ones - they worked well but only have adhesive on the bottom 25% of the mount. Interesting concept but they are almost twice the price of regular mounts. I only see them listed at Stanley Gibbions at this point: http://www.stanleygibbons.com/stanl...og/7881/7980

Not sure if they are worth the price unless they become more competitive with the adhesive mounts. However, after transferring some recent mint stamps with split back mounts, about 10% of the stamps were damaged as moisture got into the split back. Saving one high valued mint stamp might pay for price difference.

How did the moisture get into the split-back mounts? If it got in when the mount was moistened in order to attach it to the album page, then that's easily avoided by moistening lightly only the very, very top edge. I am careful not even to come remotely close to the split (and I do look at the back of the mount after moistening to make sure it's not close. If I did get close to the split, I will carefully take the stamp out and use fresh mount (possibly reusing the first mount after it has totally dried).

If moisture got in after the mount was on the page, then that's a whole different animal--but it would almost have to bring with it other kinds of damage to the album.

Some have claimed that gum can be damaged simply by the split-back leaving a line on the gum over time. I've never seen solid information about how common this might be or whether it only happens under faulty storage conditions.

My assumption is too much moisture was applied. I'm careful to use the least amount of moisture possible, but it's not an exact science ;-). I have since switched to top loaded mounts "Hawid" style, so I hope not to have the same problems in the future.

Use a glue stick to secure mounts to album pages. They are moisture free, acid free, and can be wiped off a stamp before it dries.
