Hi guys...there are lots of designer mistakes with Newfoundland stamps..Below are a few of them..Help from Archives Canada...Re-entries.com...NSSC, and of course mosts from my collection.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 - Caribou stamps...These stamps were designed with a caribou head and moose antlers..MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

2 - Lord Bacon stamp..His real name is not "Lord Bacon". but "Lord Verulam"..MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

3 - Newfoundland stamp...They printed the original map stamp with "C Bauld" above "C Norman"..They later changed it as you can see...MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

4 - Cabot's ship the "Matthew"...This is not a picture of Cabot's ship, but in fact Christopher Columbia's ship the "Santa Maria"...MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

5 - "Humber river Canyon" stamp..They misspelled "Canyon" with the word "Canon"....MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

6 - John Cabot stamp...The picture of John Cabot if not his picture..They never had a picture of him, so they used his son's picture "Sebastian Cabot"....MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

7 - Ships sailing from Plymouth to Newfoundland stamp..It shows 5 ships..In fact 2 days into the journey the "Bark Ralegh" had to turn back to Plymouth..It never arrived..There should only be 4 ships in the picture...MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

8 - "seal" stamp...The designer made a seal stamp with "claws" on the front of the seal instead of "flippers"....MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

9- Spelling mistake on the "Lord Bacon: stamp...Scott #92 had the "Z" backwards, but was rectified on the Scott # 92a stamp...MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

10 - The "Cod" stamp...Designer drew a picture of a cod fish but left off the "split" tail of a cod...MISTAKE

Then was rectified in later "Cod" fish stamps. as seen below...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

11 - The 24 cents fishing boat was reversed from what the picture was originally...MISTAKE.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

THERE ARE MORE...

A small clarification if I may...Caribou do have palmeted antlers, just not a prominate as a moose. However, normally it is the brow tines of a caribou that palmate. Roosevelt elk will also palmate the crown of their antlers, as do Red Deer.

They didn't have the web when they put their catalogue togather. I especially like the clawed seal!

......

12 - Also the "John Guy" stamp lacks the motto "Quaerite Prime Dei" from the crest...MISTAKE

------------------------------------------------------------------------

13 - 60th Year of her reign...BUT...Why is the number one in the top right corner reversed....MISTAKE

----------------------------------------------------------------------

14 - 400th anniversary of John Cabot's discovery shows a "caribou hunting, Newfoundland sport"...BUT...Photo graph is of American H. Clay Pearse hunting on his land in Missouri...MISTAKE

as a designer, all I can say is Wow! Some of those a really bad. My favorite is the clawed seal. But to NFLD's defense, I read that one was engraved by the American Bank Note Co. and the designer had never seen a seal?! But you would think whoever was in charge of approving the die would of caught that!

You think that is bad southpaw...Take a look at the design on Canada's Parliament building clock, obviously designed by a Canadian (I hope).

Wert,

Thank you for sharing. A great post. Of course as some of you know, I only collect Newfoundland, extensively and this was near and dear to my heart.

I am of course biased, but it seems to me that one of the defining, unique and positive characteristics of collecting Newfie stamps is the breadth and depth of errors or varieties. I would not know about other countries. But it appears that for a small country/province who only issued about 300+ stamps and no more, there are an overabundance "per capita" of these. which is cool for collecting, imho.

I hesitate to add to the items above, because I would have to stop work today to do so, and probably bring down the website with the volume of things in my head, but one small one to add : in #4 above--if you look at the ship's sails versus the flag--it is fluffing the wrong way into the wind. (ie the flag is backwards). Another error.

Wert, In example #3 there is something else different between those stamps! The small caption located in the Atlantic Ocean on those stamps, directly below the "ONE" in 'ONE CENT' and to the left of the map scale on #145 seems to have an acronym, while #163 shows C. Chidley! Error fixed ?
Also on example 6 In the quote under Cabot is using Old English "Hym" for 'Him' and would not be an error!

Thanks for the info Wert. FYI, if you ask any Newfie, they'll tell you that Seal Flippers are much more tastier than Seal Claws......
