Forgive me I do not know much about GB cancels. I picked up this 108 in an old 1947 Scott International collection I found locally. I was wondering what kind of cancel is this and if it detracts from it's value. Thanks.

Being a high value 5 shilling, you may assume it to probably be a Parcel Strike.
Indeed it is, MR = Manchester Roller style.
For the Postmark collector, very nice,
not so, perhaps for the mint stamp collector.
I like it, it has a story. Thanks for posting.

I would say the cancel would detract from the price your average collector would pay, generally speaking.

Buyers of classic Great Britain are ruthless when it comes to condition, so the centering would be a big issue, too. The high catalogue values of Great Britain material are for really pristine material. More so than most other collecting areas.

That being said, if this is just a part of a worldwide collection, it is a fine placeholder that might last you forever. If GB is something you want to actively pursue, you will probably choose to upgrade at some point.

My 2d.

Very true, I'm sure. But does that not also mean that a relatively more robust market for secondary quality material is created, because the purist demand for high quality has driven the prices so high, thus driven them out of reach of a larger than usual (when compared to other countries) pool of buyers?

Just askin'.

Enlighten me.

Well, this is my opinion, only...

There is plenty of good-looking material on the market, and most things you want can be acquired at around 20% of CV. There are exceptions. I've never come across a nice 1 pound PUC at 25% of CV.

You can buy relatively okay GB for 5-10% of CV.

Thanks for the info. I'm just putting together an APS sales book, and this particular cancel really stood out. I'm familiar with many US cancels but not foreign. Reviewing prices of Great Britain material on ebay, I'm astounded at the apparent softness in the market. I'm pricing my material at 1/3 of Scott (dependent on condition of course) but maybe that's too much!

Someone else will have to weigh in on the proper pricing strategy for GB circuit books. I don't know what APS circuit buyers are interested in paying for GB material.
