Hi guys...came across this letter sent from Germany to Canada...They added a Canadian custom tax stamp...My question is did they add it after it came to Canada and when the post man delivered it, would the recipient have to pay the duty at the door..??

Or who would pay the custom tax..?

Robert

Given the position of the stamp, and that it appears to have been cancelled in Hamburg, why would you think it was added after it came to Canada? Now, how it came to be added in Hamburg is another, and intriguing question, that I could only speculate about.

It would appear from wt1's posting that the various ports within different nations, Germany being one of them, had a stock of these stamps and that explains the Hamburg cancellation question (?)

Wert, is this your own personal cover? The reason I ask this is that the same cover jumped out at me in another Canadian Revenue Newsletter, which I have scanned for everyone.

The use of the Customs Duty stamps was simple. A duty was charged on advertising matter entering Canada. The stamp permitted the sender to prepay that duty. Receiving a piece of junk mail and being required to pay a fee for the privilege would not leave a warm and fuzzy feeling for the advertiser and his product.

I understand both these statements. However, for a person 'located in Germany' would there be a supply of these Canadian customs stamps available in the post office of Hamburg, or any other location in that country (or other countries as well)? Since the stamp is tied with a Hamburg machine cancellation, this makes me wonder.

Maybe not at a post office or other location in Germany, but firms doing a lot of international postal business in need of the stamps could surely arrange to have a supply sent to them from Canada. The excerpt posted by wt1 infers that they had them, and they had to come from somewhere.

Agreed, not necessarily a post office, but, a government office of some capacity that would have the authority to apply these stamps.
Interesting thread to say the least

Correct. These were not sold through the post office. Most of the uses I've seen are from the United States. I presume that they were ordered directly from Canada Revenue.
