Surely some FDC collector (of which I'm not) has thought of this before. April 15th deadline for filing federal taxes is approaching. You are late in getting them done. Not to worry. You ignore the deadline. Go to the post office at your leisure in very early June, or late May. Purchase this year's Civil War issue that came out on April 9th. Affix the issues to your tax return and you then have until 60 days following the issuance to get that 4/9/15 First Day postmark on your tax return and you're not late. Voila! Problem solved! Not sure this would work as my wife is always quick to remind me that I'm an idiot.
How about giving it a try and then coming back and telling us how it worked out for you :) My guess is the US Post Office would not forward such a thing to the IRS and instead would return it to you with your FDC postmark and leaving you in trouble for not filing.
So Kimo, what I hear you saying is....don't put a return address on, and just put the address, don't indicate that the recipient is the IRS. I don't believe the post office would be that diligent, or care, that it was going to the IRS. I do, however, believe the IRS would get it June and collectively say..."uh...no." Send me a terse note with a demand for the penalty. Don't think I'd be going to Leavenworth.
As long as you owe nothing you would be fine. However, the IRS does not forgive late returns based on postal dates that far surpassed of the April 15th, deadline. Remember they never forgive our mistakes and seldom apologize for their mistakes. Just say'n...
