Cancellation Machine Broken..?

Hi guys..Nothing earth shattering, but there is NO "I" in the letters "PEI"...Could have been a broken cancellation machine..??

Nothing wrong with the machine, Canada Post has been using two letter abbreviations for a long time. Just like Ontario is ON and Quebec is PQ.

I thought the correct postal code for Prince Edward Island is PE, since Canadian and US postal abbreviations for Provinces and States are all two CAPITAL LETTERS such as NU for Nunavut and NE for Nebraska. So there is nothing missing in the town dial.

BTW, the US had to use NE for Nebraska since NB was already taken for New Brunswick.

Note that PQ can also stand for the French abbreviation "Province Québec" which is the abbreviation that was used until the introduction of the North American standard QC.

What started as Upper Canada & Lower Canada changed to Canada West and Canada East, respectively in 1841, when the two merged into the "United Province of Canada." The two parts of the province were called "Canada West" & "Canada East" until Confederation in 1867.

Now I have 2 dated Large Queens, both from 1869. One has "ONT" while the other still shows C.E.

I suppose the logical explanation is that some post offices kept using their old franking stamps for a few years? Have I struck it rich?? Ah the fun of CDS cancels...
