Heading out tomorrow to a wedding this weekend just north of Detroit.
Does anyone know much about the store, America's Stamp Stop, in Berkley, Michigan? Anything about their stock? What supplies they have on hand? Etc.?
My wife has "given permission" for me to stop in there Saturday morning, so I'm just curious.

That is interesting. I have always associated the US and America as synonymous. Though I have heard it continentally referred to as the Americas. But if someone say they serve America, I assume,(though I hate that word), they mean the USA specifically. |

He preached that the country is the United States of America, but that America comprised North and South America and that an "American" could be a person in any country in North or South America unless there was a specific reference to the United States of America. Sigh. Those were the days when newspapers valued accuracy. |

Language usage changes and evolves over time. I think nowadays most people would think of an 'American" as someone from the USA and anything else wouldn't ever cross their minds. |

It's an old Canadian beef, less so a Latin American beef. I studied in Canada, it's part of the Canadian nationalism shtick. I also studied in Germany for years. There "American" was used precisely in order to distinguish Canadians from USAmericans. And Canadians lost no opportunity to assure Germans that they were NOT Americans.
They can't have it both ways. If they want the "American" label, then take what comes with it when traveling the world. Or accept the reality that for most of the world it is synonymous with USA. When used for the southern Americas, it is given a modifier precisely for that reason. Canadians don't need a modifier since Canadian itself has a worldwide meaning which Canadians proudly make use of.
Oh, and my ancestors pioneered in the Berlin (now Kitchener-Waterloo) area of Upper Canada in the 1820s and are buried there. They were in Manhattan in the 1650s and Pennsylvania in the 1720s. I think I have some credentials on these matters.

So what would you call somebody from the United States of America? I mean pertaining to where they are from, not what you think of them. :-) |

In Chinese, American is pronounced "Meiguo" which has a literal translation as "beautiful country". However, I was in a taxi in Shanghai with an American friend (I am Canadian) when the taxi driver asked us what country were from. When I said Canadian, he smiled and said "Very good!". When my friend said "American", he just grunted. Take from that what you will. :) |

Quote: Those were the days when newspapers valued accuracy. Those were the days when there were newspapers! A friend of mine was in the newspaper business until he retired a few years ago. His grandson was unable to get a job at a newspaper...apparently there are about 30% of the newspapers that existed in 1950, and those that have survived have only about 70% of the employees (maybe only 50%) that they once had. You are correct that many of them don't value accuracy anymore...but that's OK because many of them can't write any more either. |

I wanted to visit them when in Detroit this past December but never did. They are supposed to have a huge stock. Not far away is Birmingham stamps who also has a gigantic stock. I believe the 2 companies are less than 45 minutes apart. Please let us know what you think. |

Sadly, the location of the wedding and the time of the wedding didn't allow for a visit. Maybe next time - we have family up that way. |
