I don't even know what to say about this one...

I found it on the back of this green 1 Shilling Queen Victoria.

Any ideas what is going on with this watermark? Anybody seen one like it before?

Looks like the Heraldic Emblems watermark (wmk 24 in Scott), seemingly inverted as mentioned by Pagoda, with a bit of an offset. This lines up with SC #28 as it should.

Do those look like little stems on the roses to anybody but me? Or have I spent too much time inhaling lighter fluid the last couple days and am starting to hallucinate...?

"I don't even know what to say about this one..."

It is a difficult one as I was tying myself in knots just thinking about how it MIGHT look as regards the watermark.
a) I think it is a misplaced watermark
b) I think it is an inverted watermark
c) I think it is also a reversed watermark

All the above needs checking as my brain hurts but the logic goes like this...

Normal back of stamp as you see it

[

HOWEVER... Stanley Gibbons, while listing the inverted/ reversed watermark, does not give a price for it so that may indicate it is not too common The damage and trimming would obviously affect any value but it might be worth a little effort to check this one out further... assuming it could be inverted and reversed, that is.

...OR... you have one stamp upside down in relation to the other in your scans. In that case...I give up as it is too difficult to comprehend all this upside down back to front reversal misplacement stuff.

Final try. If this is what you see in your watermark tray with top of stamp ...at the top ... then it is a normal oriented watermark but with misplacement. I think.

Thanks all! These emblems are real mind-benders when they start shifting around. I do believe I've finally got this all worked out.

I am the proud owner (LOL) of multiple examples of the problem (in different manifestations), and a very helpful friend did some work with a couple of them last night. The top stamp is a lilac 6p, the bottom is the 1 shilling I started the thread with:

I guess the "stems" on the 1 shilling are the little wires holding the watermark together in the middle of the sheet. Confounded me because all my other examples show the frame line, and thus nothing directly abuts.

So yes... inverted. More or less off-set. Phew!! Thanks all!!

Your watermark is not inverted as you are looking at the stamp upside down in the first scan.

Ayup. You're right Scotty. Told you I'd inhaled too many fumes LOL!

Pretty sure the 6p is, though.

Here's the front:

And here's the back (also shown above):

And even though she's a mess with her pulled perfs and trim, I've learned a LOT from her and the others. :)

With the thistle top left instead of bottom right... it can only be (cue drum roll).... inverted. Well done. Pity about the mice nibbles as they both would have been higher value stamps.
