I bought this postcard as part of a 3 card group offered by a Canadian seller on ebay. Besides being a nice postcard from Latvia, which I collect, the house on the far side of the bridge is my grandparents house pre-World War 2. The card was mailed Printed Matter rate to Switzerland apparently as part of an exchange club from a gentleman in the town of Valmiera, Latvia which is upstream on the River Gauja from the bridge in the picture. As mentioned in another topic on the forum today, apparently the practice was to put the stamps on the picture side of the postcard so both could be seen when mounted in an album. I have seen a lot of that over the years.

The best part still remains being my grandparents house. As you can imagine, not many photos made it along when they were refugees after the war. Surprisingly, this is the second postcard with a similar view that I have picked up in the past year.

FYI the translation of the caption is Murjani(the district in Latvia northeast of the capital Riga) River Gauja Bridge

Thank you for the picture. I had a chance to visit Latvia for the first time 24 years ago and met my uncle and got a chance to walk the property. It's just cool running across postcards that have traveled who knows where along the way but have a personal connection as part of my stamp collecting hobby.

I would love to find a philatelic item I can relate to my grandfather's participation in the Klondike Gold Rush.

Cheers, Robert
