Help With Deciphering Back Of This Cover

Here is a little blue cover with some history, new to me but 145 years old.

Unitrade #24a / NSSC #26 (pelure paper variety) and combined with
Unitrade #32 / NSSC #32

From St Johns August 15, 1870 to Trinity August 20, 1870

The back has some ink handwriting...either recipient or sender...doesnt appear to be docketing information but personal note or list of costs, I think in pounds/shillings

Appears to be an invoice for services. Looks like it says "Assisting Constable Puid Gibbs"

Very nice cover tommy, and funny, the stamps are at the left side of the cover and not the right where you think it should be..?

Third line from top may say SEVENTY so its some maths calculation at top for a payment receipt

Could Libbs be short for Liberties? i.e. Paid Liberties? Its not Puid Gibbs, that's an L not G

I read hundreds of old letters so am use to reading this kind of scribbled note on covers

That is correct. An amount for One pound, twelve shillings and ninepence in old money.





That should, of course, be £1. 13/3 as I missed out the "1" after the first calculation part.

I read that as "Tibbs" (as in "They call me Mr Tibbs"), rather than Gibbs or Libbs.

Thank you for all the help above deciphering the handwriting, I think I have the basic details and looks to be notes about some payments made after the envelope was posted.

With regard to the seal on the back, I've done so more research (using magnifying lense and the latest issue of Walsh's NSSC which lists known business covers). It is "JN Finlay 275 Water Street", in St Johns. Not cataloged but I believe that they were brothers who had several businesses.
