UFO Thread: Unidentified, Flawed, & Originals W/Cv Estimates

Okay, so the title acronym isn't great, but here's a thread in which you can post your "what on Earth..?" stamps...

In other words, your unvalued or unidentified specimens that could be worth a dime, or a diamond..

I'm sure the helpful veteran philatelists on this board could give you some interesting insights. Plus I think it would be fun to gaze upon some oddball items.

Here's two of my own to start the ball rolling:





A copy of #72 in a peculiar shade of yellow, very much like the yellow-brown on the standard shade of #23. The second photo shows the difference from the 'normal' orange.

Nothing in Unitrade...anyone have some insight into this oddball?

My guess the red has been bleached out due to exposure to sunlight.

Well, Robson Lowe' s Encyclopedia of Stamps of the British Empire lists a color variety on the 8 cent (this stamp) of dark orange.Since this is not really a catalog, no price offered on this, and date of publication is 1973. It is a wonderful source of information tho.

Thanks for the replies. Dark orange is in Unitrade too, but this stamp is decidedly yellow.

Trainwreck: I thought of that--some kind of exposure to the sun or a bleaching agent, but the postmark doesn't seem affected, and the color shade is constant throughout--I might expect a more blotchy appearance if it had been out tanning...

Of course, I've never conducted an experiment!

Here's another stamp, not so much an oddball, but a Die 2 (verified) copy of #139c. Luckily it has great margins and a nice duplex--almost a Jumbo copy. As luck would have it, Unitrade doesn't value 139c for used. But on both standard surcharge varieties, the mint and used are valued the same.

The mint VF cat for 139c is $1,000. I would assume the used copy would be catalogued as the same?



In any event, this was just a lucky find while sifting through my old inventory.

I collect these EFO's so I guess I'd be the guy to post something Strange to this thread. Start with this 2c Jubillee.

3c Large Queen - look at the bottom right margin. There is a thick horizontal line. I've never seent this before and it is unlisted. Anyone have an idea about any of mine? Strange unknowns.

But I thought I'd resurrect this thread I have a few more items of interest. Though not UFOs (unidentified Filatelic objects ), per-say..

PAGODA, that's a very real possibility. I've compared it to other surcharges..it is a bit different (and lighter ink), but they're all quite unique. I wonder, does a dash in Unitrade ( - ) mean 'value unknown' or.. ''never issued.' I think/hope it's the former.

This last stamp also appears to have a broken frame line- second frame line from the queen's upper lip.

Any word on my two contenders? I have a feeling they're common, I'm not unfamiliar..

vfstamp - to me the 2c Edward looks like a machine cancel. The 1é2c LQ looks interesting, though!

Well, it's an RPO cancel will its full OG. Is that anything special?

And I'm glad you say the 1/2c LQ is 'interesting.' Gives me the feeling that for once, one of my 'rarities' is actually something special. :)

I don't know enough about the Edward Issue to give any opinion on the 2c strip but it does sound like something. Have you compared the postmark to the Admirals with the postmarks on the gum on the back?

this is an odd partly double perf, and a flaw at the bottom that is somewhat similar to the "balloon" flaw
